Home Modifications
Wherever you live, your home environment affects how you perform your daily activities. It’s important to create a suitable environment that enables independence and participation.
Changing or modifying your home is a big step and Access Therapy would like to be there in every step of the process, guiding and supporting you along the way. Our team ensures practical solutions to create an accessible and safe space for you and those supporting you. Our knowledge of the Australian Standard 1428 (Design for Access and Mobility) and experience in home modifications to support access gives us exceptional insight into identifying environmental barriers and creating environments to support access, function, and participation. By understanding you and your needs, we work with you, through the process, clearly communicating all recommendations and providing conceptual designs for your review. We attend joint visits with licenced builders where necessary to ensure works are feasible and will be compliant with the Building Code of Australia (BCA).
How It Works
Environmental barriers limit the potential for independence and maximal engagement in activities in the most important place: your home. Hence, home modifications are changes to the layout, structure, or fittings of your home to ensure you can safely access and move around the areas you frequently use. Appropriate changes are made to your home so that you can still move freely, engage more, and be independent despite any disability.
Access Therapy provides a wide range of solutions including:
- Handrails on steps or staircase
- Grabrails where you need some extra support
- Removal of shower screens and installation of a handheld shower hose
- Ramps for wheelchairs or ambulant access to and from the home
- Widening doorways and sometimes hallways for the use of a wheelchair
- Bathroom redesign to allow the installation of a level access shower and ensuring sufficient space for your equipment and those assisting you.
- Lifts to support access to the home where a ramp is not feasible.
- Internal lifts where ground floor living cannot be supported
What We Can Do
Access Therapy is a team of highly experienced occupational therapists in Sydney who conduct an extensive assessment of your abilities and how your home set-up affects your participation, safety, and independence. Your therapist will ask you to perform certain daily activities in your home and then create a comprehensive report along with any recommendations.
As professionals in the industry, we know what you need to allow any funding for your home modifications. Our team can provide and create such documentation for you.
Home modifications are specific to you and what you need to function day to day in your own home. Our occupational therapists work closely with you along with builders, designers, and other tradesmen to ensure the modifications are not only suitable for your needs but promote your participation and independence.
